I prepared for marriage with difficulty during the COVID-19 period last fall. In the midst of continuous changes, the preparation period for marriage has been extended, which brought more thoughts and meanings about marriage.
I had many hopes for future expectations, affection, and peace of life for the two of us. So, I made a norigae for myself with these wishes.
Traditionally, the decoration of norigae has various meanings, such as longevity, fertility, and abundance. In Korean folk painting, animals, plants, and objects are drawn to symbolize wealth, progeny-prosperity, and peace.
Mandarin ducks, carp, and butterflies mean a good relationship between a couple, a vase with flowers stands for the continuation of peace, and a common kingfisher pecking lotus pip represents fertility. As such, the wish for marriage was expressed as norigae through the symbolic elements of folk painting.
