Open Space NB1 | sterling silver, silk thread, synthetic thread, stainless steel 50x34x2cm 2021
My work begins from analyzing the shapes of abstract lines that are seen from buildings. Lines ― an essential element of plastic art ― hold an inner difference that alters by their individuality and uniqueness, not by repetition of the element. And they connote accumulation of time left in them. In my recent work I have examined the lines that give shape to roof tiles, windows, doors, and courtyards in Korean traditional houses, and reinterpreted them from a modern viewpoint. I present these works in which traditional lines are reconstructed in a modern style in this exhibition.
The lines of refined differences disclosed by winding the surface of a metal with thread repeat emptiness and fullness, visualize an open space between the lines. The open spaces are the ground of lines being and an ultimate world where an infinite creation is possible. Furthermore, the existence of lines is re-established by revealing them through empty spaces.
